Yunnan 8D7N Family Trip
Kunming • Dali • Lijiang • Shangri-La
Easy for seniors & kids | Real experience | Tips + full itinerary
Last month, our family (Singapore → Yunnan) just returned from an 8-day trip covering Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La.
Kunming’s warm winter sunshine, the breeze at Dali’s Erhai Lake, the ancient charm of Lijiang, and the snow-capped mountains left such a deep impression.
My parents are still talking about it!
This was also our first time travelling in Yunnan, and honestly — if you don’t plan properly, it can be quite challenging.
The attractions are far apart, there are entry limits for popular sites, transport transfers can be confusing, and altitude differences can be tiring.
If you’re travelling with elderly parents or kids, it can get exhausting very quickly.
Thankfully, we were introduced to a highly recommended local private tour planner in Yunnan — 小琪 WhatsApp/WeChat:18889080960
She arranged our entire 8-day trip, with all transport, hotels and attraction bookings handled for us.
Cost came up to around 3000+ RMB per person, which is really good value for a fully guided, hassle-free private tour.
So now, I’m sharing our real experience below — hopefully it helps anyone planning a trip to Yunnan.
1. What we learned from our first Yunnan trip
Yunnan is huge — different regions, different climates, and each area has its own unique attractions.
Top Attractions in Yunnan
Kunming: Stone Forest, Dianchi Lake
Dali: Dali Old Town, Cangshan, Erhai Lake
Lijiang: Lijiang Old Town, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Lashi Lake, Shuhe Old Town, Blue Moon Valley, Lugu Lake
Shangri-La: Potatso Park, Songzanlin Monastery, Dukezong Old Town
Xishuangbanna: Wild Elephant Valley, Tropical Botanical Garden, Mann Ting Park, Night Markets
For many first-timers, the most common issue is:
“The attractions are far apart and transport is not convenient.”
You end up wasting time travelling, and miss out on must-visit places.
For us, everything was smooth because 小琪 planned our schedule perfectly according to our pace and preferences.
She handled all the transport, hotel bookings and attraction reservations — we literally didn’t have to worry about anything.
We stayed in comfortable boutique hotels, ate authentic local Yunnan food, and enjoyed a completely stress-free trip.
Tip: Popular attractions like Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Blue Moon Valley, and Erhai Lake cruises require advance booking.
During peak season, the cable car for the glacier park can be “impossible to get” without pre-reservation.
2. Why Yunnan is NOT ideal for full free-and-easy (especially with elderly parents)
It comes down to one reality:Too tiring!
● Cities are 3–4 hours apart
● Attractions are far from each other
● Booking tickets and hotels yourself is risky
● Seniors get tired carrying luggage during transfers
● Costs often exceed your expectations
3. And why normal group tours don’t work (especially for foreigners)
● Rushed schedules
● Limited photo/time at key attractions
● 40–50 people in one group
● Many low-cost tours include shopping stops
● Early mornings, long walks — seniors and kids cannot keep up
4. Our recommendation: Private Semi-Free Tour (Private Family Tour)
This was our choice — and honestly the best decision we made.
A private local planner (like 小琪) handles:
✔ Route planning
✔ Private vehicle with driver
✔ All entrance bookings
✔ Flexible schedule
✔ No shopping
✔ Elder-friendly pacing
✔ Higher comfort and zero stress
This was our first time travelling in China without feeling tired or overwhelmed.
2. Our Actual 8D7N Yunnan Family Itinerary
(Kunming → Dali → Lijiang → Shangri-La → Kunming)
Perfect for families, seniors, children and first-timers.
Day 1 — Singapore → Kunming
Airport pickup • Hotel check-in • Kunming Old Street
Our driver was already waiting with a signboard, very smooth transfer.
Dinner was at a local restaurant recommended by 小琪 — steam pot chicken, rice noodles and tofu.
After dinner, we walked around Kunming Old Street and Jinma Biji Archway.
Quiet, clean and relaxing — perfect first night for seniors.
Day 2 — Kunming → Dali
High-speed rail • Erhai Lake Cruise • Longkan Pier
● Private pickup at Dali station
● Boat ride on Erhai Lake
● Coffee at Longkan Pier
● Santorini-style photo spots in Shuanglang
● Glass ball & sea-view photo points
The Erhai wind was gentle and cooling — my parents kept saying “Yunnan is so beautiful.”
Overnight at a boutique lake-view hotel.
Day 3 — Dali
Jeep ride around Erhai • Xizhou Old Town • Tie-Dye Experience
One of our favourite days:
● Jeep photoshoot around Erhai
● S-curve road & flower fields
● Xizhou snack tasting (crispy milk fan)
● Tie-dye workshop at Zhoucheng Village
● Free time in Dali Old Town
Relaxed, photogenic, very suitable for seniors.
Day 4 — Dali → Lijiang
Lashi Lake • Baisha Old Town • Lijiang Old Town
At Lashi Lake, you can choose horseback riding or just stroll around the lake.
Baisha Old Town was quiet and peaceful — ideal for my parents.
Night walk in Lijiang Old Town was magical with its lights and streams.
Overnight at a boutique guesthouse near the old town.
Day 5 — Lijiang
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain • Blue Moon Valley • Shuhe Old Town
Altitude day — 小琪 prepared oxygen cans, warmers and reminded us to hydrate.
● Snow Mountain viewing
● Blue Moon Valley (so blue it looks unreal)
● Shuhe Old Town, even calmer than Lijiang
A slow and comfortable pace. My parents handled it well.
Day 6 — Lijiang → Shangri-La
Tiger Leaping Gorge • First Bend of Yangtze • Dukezong Old Town
Longer drive, but scenery was incredible.
● Yangtze’s famous river bend
● Tiger Leaping Gorge’s powerful canyon
● Dukezong Old Town (sunny & peaceful)
Night visited a Tibetan family home — such a unique experience.
Overnight in a Tibetan-style boutique hotel.
Day 7 — Shangri-La → Kunming
Songzanlin Monastery • Napa Lake • High-speed rail back to Kunming
Songzanlin Monastery (Little Potala Palace) was my parents’ favourite —
very majestic, very serene.
After lunch, we took the train back to Kunming and enjoyed a warm mushroom hotpot for dinner.
Day 8 — Kunming → Singapore
Dianchi Lake • Seagull viewing • Airport transfer
Before flying home, we visited Dianchi Lake to see the seasonal seagulls.
Beautiful winter scene — white birds flying across the blue sky.
小琪 sent us to the airport early, and even prepared Yunnan flower cakes as a parting gift.
Such a heart-warming gesture.
Best Time to Visit Yunnan (Especially for Singapore/Malaysia Travelers)
November – April (Highly recommended)
● Cool weather
● Seagull season at Erhai & Dianchi
● Snow Mountain at its best
● Fewer crowds
● Seniors feel more comfortable
Must-Try Yunnan Foods (Senior-Friendly & Delicious)
Thanks to 小琪, we avoided overpriced tourist restaurants.
● Grilled milk fan
● Crispy tofu
● Mushroom hotpot
● Yunnan rice noodles
● Fresh flower cakes
● Yak yogurt
● Dali fruits + yogurt
Everything suited our taste perfectly.
Final Thoughts
For us, this trip proved something important:
“Yunnan’s beauty is best enjoyed slowly —
and 小琪’s planning made our journey peaceful and effortless.”

So lucky to have met such a good local guide! I’m also planning to visit in mid-December for about 7–8 days. But I’ll be traveling alone — do you know if 小琪 can also arrange a trip for just one person?

@Kate Thanks for the detailed sharing! I just wanted to ask — does the 3,000+ fee include accommodation?

Yunnan, China is really beautiful! The itinerary looks amazing.

@Coco Yes, the tickets, transportation, and hotels were all included, but meals were not. Overall, the hotels were really nice.
I especially loved the Lijiang guesthouse that 小琪 arranged for us — it was amazing!

Taking kids to Yunnan is really great! I just came back from a trip with my son — the scenery was absolutely beautiful. Truly worth recommending!

I want to contact 小琪 to help arrange my trip, but I haven’t been able to reach them yet. Do they have any other contact methods? It’s quite urgent…

We also booked our Yunnan trip with 小琪 this time, and it was really great! At first, we contacted another agency, but they were super unreliable — even the hotel prices they quoted were higher than what we saw online, so we felt like something wasn’t right. Later, a friend recommended 小琪, and within less than two hours of chatting, the whole itinerary was settled. Super efficient!
小琪 is very professional and really knows the local area. Everything was arranged smoothly, and they also brought us to try many authentic Yunnan dishes. The whole trip was easy, fun, and totally worth it. Highly recommended!

@Hannah The 18889080960 number is correct. He’s probably guiding a tour right now or just hasn’t seen the message yet. Don’t worry — you can try calling directly, or send an SMS asking him to add you on WeChat. He should reply faster that way.

小琪 is really warm and friendly, and the service is great. We’ve already contacted her, and she’s now helping us book the train tickets. Thanks to the blogger for the recommendation — it’s really helpful!

Thanks to the blogger’s recommendation, we also contacted 小琪 last month, and she helped us arrange an 8-day Yunnan trip. The whole experience was truly amazing — everyone in our group had such a great time! Shangri-La was definitely the highlight; the scenery was unbelievably beautiful. And all the local food we tried was recommended by 小琪, and every place she brought us to was really good — no disappointments at all.
We’re giving our guide 小琪 a full score for this trip. Truly worth recommending!
