I plan to travel to Tibet, China with my family and friends next year. I would like to know whether Singaporeans can currently travel to Tibet independently?

Tibet — Heaven on Earth: Our 11-Day Real Journey to the Roof of the World

Tibet, often called “the Roof of the World,” is also known as the purest land of the human spirit.
When you stand beneath the snow mountains, watching sunlight spill across the golden roof of the Potala Palace, you’ll understand the true meaning of “sacred and awe-inspiring.”
For me, Tibet is the one place I’ve been to — and still want to return to again and again.
The purity, the power, and the peace there can’t be captured by any photograph.

This is a story about trust, travel, and the soul.
I want to share our real experience with you — maybe it will ease some of your worries, and give you the courage to finally go to that “dreamlike land.”

1. The Beginning — Where Our Trust Began

Hello everyone, I’m Jie from Malaysia.
In August, together with my family and friends — seven of us in total — we set out on one of the most unforgettable trips of our lives: an 11-day deep journey through Tibet.

Like most people planning a trip to Tibet, I was worried — about altitude sickness, safety, and logistics.
I read countless guides, asked several Malaysian travel agencies, but their packages were expensive, complicated, and somehow didn’t feel right.

Then a friend who had just returned from Tibet told me:“You should contact a local Tibetan guide directly. It’s safer, cheaper, and much more flexible.”

She recommended a professional local guide named 多吉, and that was how our perfect journey began.

From the moment we met her, every concern we had disappeared.
She helped us with everything — from Tibet Entry Permits and oxygen-equipped hotels to vehicle arrangements and daily schedules.
She even prepared spare oxygen bottles for the kids in advance.
That’s when I realized — in a place like Tibet, having the right person beside you means everything.

If you’re planning your own Tibet trip, I truly recommend reaching out to 多吉.
You can contact her at 13298952296.

2. Important Info for Foreign Travelers

If you are from Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, or Taiwan, please note:
Foreign visitors must apply for a Tibet Entry Permit through a licensed Chinese travel agency.
Independent travel is not allowed — all foreign tourists must have a local guide throughout the trip.

For groups of 6–8 people (like ours), I strongly recommend a private customized tour.
No rush, no strangers — your route and pace are all tailored to your needs.
Our itinerary followed the Lhasa–Nyingchi–Shigatse–Everest Base Camp route, all arranged by 多吉.

3. How to Get to Tibet

There are no direct international flights to Tibet.
Most travelers enter via major Chinese cities:

  • From Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, or Hong Kong, you can fly via Chengdu, Chongqing, Xining, Xi’an, or Kunming to Lhasa Gonggar Airport (code: LXA).

  • Or, for an unforgettable experience, take the Qinghai–Tibet Railway from Chengdu, Chongqing, Xining, or Lanzhou — the scenery is breathtaking, but be prepared for the altitude.

We chose Kuala Lumpur → Chengdu → Lhasa.
When we landed in Chengdu, 多吉 had already arranged a private car and handed us our Tibet Permits in person.
Everything went smoothly and professionally — it gave us full peace of mind before flying into Lhasa.

4. Best Time to Visit Tibet

  • Spring (Mar–May): Ideal for eastern Tibet — especially Nyingchi’s Peach Blossom Festival. Great visibility for Everest.

  • Summer (Jun–Aug): Warm and vibrant. Rain mostly falls at night — this is Tibet’s peak travel season.

  • Autumn (Sep–Nov): Golden fields and crystal-clear skies — perfect for photographers.

  • Winter (Dec–Feb): Quiet, sunny, and budget-friendly. Experience the calm, spiritual side of Tibet.

5. Must-Visit Places in Tibet

Lhasa — Potala Palace & Jokhang Temple
The grandeur of the Potala Palace and the sacred atmosphere of Jokhang Temple are beyond words.
多吉 helped us pre-book the Potala Palace tickets so we didn’t have to queue for hours.
We stayed in oxygen-equipped hotels and used oxygen vehicles — none of us had altitude sickness.

Yamdrok Lake & Namtso Lake
That blue… no camera can capture it.
Sunshine, mountains, and fluttering prayer flags — the world feels impossibly clean.

Nyingchi & Basum Lake
Known as “the Jiangnan of Tibet,” this area offers gentle scenery — tranquil lakes and snow reflections.
We sat by the water in silence for a long time, not wanting to break the peace.

Sejila Mountain
Snow-capped all year round — we saw four seasons in one day.

6. Our 11-Day Itinerary

7. Cost & What’s Included

Our 11-day trip cost around RMB 6,000+ per person, covering nearly everything:

  • Transportation: Private vehicle for the entire journey

  • Accommodation: 10 nights (oxygen-equipped hotels included)

  • Tickets: Entry to all scenic spots

  • Meals: Some main meals included

多吉 handled every detail clearly and honestly.
Compared with packages we saw in Malaysia, this was much more affordable — and 100% worry-free.

8. Practical Travel Tips

  • Altitude Sickness: Start taking Rhodiola 5 days before the trip; carry portable oxygen.

  • Clothing: Temperature varies greatly — bring thermal layers and a windproof jacket.

  • Sun Protection: SPF 50+, sunglasses, and a hat are essential.

  • Accommodation: Choose oxygen-equipped hotels, especially for first-timers.

  • Food: Eat light, drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol.

9. What Tibet Taught Us

This trip taught me what “the meaning of travel” truly is.

At Everest Base Camp, the temperature dropped below zero at night.
My mother suddenly experienced altitude sickness.
多吉 woke up immediately, helped her with oxygen, checked her blood oxygen level, and even boiled hot water for us in the freezing dark.
It wasn’t just professionalism — it was genuine care and responsibility.

Thanks to 多吉, our trip turned from stressful to effortless, from anxious to peaceful.
She planned the route, booked our hotels, handled permits, and looked after us like family.

If you’re dreaming of Tibet — whether you want the classic route (Lhasa + Nyingchi + Shigatse) or a more adventurous one like Everest Base Camp or Ngari — contact 多吉 at 13298952296.
She’ll help you craft a plan that fits your schedule, budget, and energy level perfectly.

Tibet changes people.
Not just because of its mountains or temples, but because of what it awakens in your heart —
a quiet kind of strength,
and the courage to believe in something pure again.

Could you please recommend a travel agency in mainland China that can help us apply for the Tibet Travel Permit only? We have a group of 7 people who need to get the permit. Thanks!

I’d love to follow in your footsteps one day and explore the breathtaking beauty of Tibet myself.

Thank you so much for sharing — it’s truly helpful

Wow, I didn’t know Tibet could be explored this way! Coincidentally, my friends and I are also planning a trip to Tibet soon.

Do you happen to have 多吉 WhatsApp contact? I’d love to reach out for some travel advice. Thanks a lot!

I’ve always wanted to visit Tibet — especially to see Mount Everest and the Potala Palace!

I just haven’t had the time yet. I’ll add 多吉 on WeChat first to learn more.

Seeing this really makes me want to go right now — the scenery in Tibet is absolutely stunning!

But I heard it’s really hard to get tickets for the Potala Palace. Is it true that they’re almost impossible to book? I’m worried we might not be able to get in when we go!

Actually, I’m not too sure about the ticket situation either. When we went to the Potala Palace and other attractions, Xiaoya handled all the arrangements for us, so I didn’t really pay much attention to the prices. She’s quite familiar with things in Tibet and often shares local updates on her Moments.

If you’re seriously planning to go, I suggest reaching out to her — she’ll probably give you some very practical advice.

When you went there, did you travel on your own or join a group tour?
I heard that foreigners can only visit Tibet with an organized tour — is that true?

We traveled completely on our own that time — 多吉 accompanied us throughout the whole 11-day trip and arranged everything with great care.
If you’re going with just two or three people, I think you might have to join a group tour, since foreign travelers are required to join an organized group.
But 多吉’s tours have a really good reputation — the service is just as good as ours, only with more people.
If you have enough people, you can even request a private tour, which makes the itinerary much more flexible.
You can contact 多吉 directly to learn more about the details.

Thanks for the recommendation — I’ve already contacted 多吉!
I had actually checked out a few other agencies online before, but 多吉 turned out to be the most attentive and professional.
They explained everything about traveling in Tibet so clearly — all the main attractions are open now, and I’ve already booked my trip for the end of the month.
Really appreciate your sharing!

I visited Tibet this April and booked my trip with 多吉.

I had compared several agencies beforehand, but in the end, I felt theirs was the most reliable.

They were truly professional — to ensure quality, they even limit the number of guests they take each day.

The whole trip was perfectly arranged; from food and accommodation to our train tickets back to Chengdu, 多吉 handled everything for us.

We had an amazing time and felt completely at ease throughout the journey.

@Jie May I ask, was the 11-day trip around 6,000 RMB per person, or was that the total cost for everyone?

It’s a little over 6,000 RMB per person.
Since the trip in Tibet is quite long and the attractions are spread out, I compared several agencies before — this price is actually quite reasonable.
If you see something much cheaper, you should be cautious, as there might be hidden issues.
The price can also vary depending on the season.
For the exact cost, you can contact 多吉 directly.
