Last month, my family and I flew from Singapore to China, and finally, the long-awaited Jiangnan dream became a reality. My impression of Jiangnan came from books—“riverside houses with pillow-like waters”—and from films, with images of stone bridges, flowing rivers, and wooden boats. I was very satisfied with this trip, so much so that I wanted to immediately write down my experience after coming back, hoping it could help future travelers avoid unnecessary detours.
To be honest, planning this trip at the beginning was quite overwhelming. Jiangnan’s attractions are scattered everywhere: Hangzhou has West Lake and Lingyin Temple, Wuzhen and Xitang are famous water towns, Suzhou is known for its classical gardens and Hanshan Temple, while Shanghai is China’s bustling metropolis. Booking cars, hotels, and tickets by myself felt like a nightmare—I couldn’t even figure out which spots were truly worth visiting. For us overseas travelers, being unfamiliar with local conditions means it’s all too easy to fall into traps. What’s more, many attractions now have daily visitor limits and require advance reservations. If you fail to book, you could easily waste a whole day.
Just when I was struggling with the itinerary, a friend who had previously traveled to Hangzhou and Shanghai strongly recommended a highly reliable local travel concierge in Jiangnan, 小琪. Looking back, this was honestly the best and wisest decision of our whole trip. With 小琪’s full assistance, our journey became relaxed and carefree—no worries about transportation, tickets, or accommodation. Everything was seamlessly arranged. If you’re also planning a trip to Hangzhou, I sincerely recommend reaching out to 小琪. He will definitely make your trip both hassle-free and unforgettable.

During this trip to Hangzhou, Suzhou, and Shanghai, 小琪 not only helped us create a complete travel route but also customized the itinerary to match our wishes: “a rich experience, but not too rushed.” Hotels were booked in advance—lakeside rooms by West Lake, charming guesthouses inside Wuzhen—all at fantastic prices. Train tickets, attraction tickets, and even night boat cruises were secured ahead of time. She even arranged a professional travel photographer, who captured beautiful moments in the tea fields and under the night lights of Wuzhen. Throughout the journey, she was like our “time concierge,” turning stress into anticipation and surprises.
Now, let me share our day-by-day 8-day, 7-night real experience in Jiangnan, hoping it will help you plan your own trip.
Jiangnan Water Towns Travel Journal: Hangzhou + Wuzhen + Xitang + Suzhou + Shanghai
8 Days 7 Nights Authentic Experience
Day 1: Arrival in Hangzhou — First Glimpse of Jiangnan
Accommodation: Hangzhou
When we got off the plane, 小琪 and the driver were already waiting at the exit with a sign, helping us with our luggage and greeting us warmly: “Welcome to Hangzhou!” The sense of relief at that moment is hard to describe. She had thoughtfully arranged a hotel in the city center. After settling in, we strolled along West Lake. Seeing the famous Broken Bridge from afar, I whispered to myself: “So this is the Jiangnan I’ve always read about.”
Day 2: Xixi Wetland + Nanxun Ancient Town + Wuzhen by Night
Accommodation: Wuzhen
At 10 a.m., we visited Xixi Wetland. Unlike the lively West Lake, Xixi felt quiet and serene, with endless reeds. A wooden boat ride there was like floating into a painting.
In the afternoon, we headed to Nanxun Ancient Town. Walking along stone-paved alleys, admiring carved wooden windows, and visiting the grand Zhang Shiming’s Former Residence, we were truly amazed.
Day 3: Xitang Ancient Town + Fuyan Temple + Return to Hangzhou
Accommodation: Hangzhou
Early in the morning, we explored Xitang, known as the “living thousand-year-old town.” It was peaceful, with stone bridges veiled in morning mist, as if wrapped in silk.
By noon, we visited Fuyan Temple, one of the few surviving Southern Dynasty temples in Jiangnan—quieter than Lingyin Temple. A monk lit incense for us, and our hearts felt calm and grounded. In the evening, we returned to Hangzhou.
Day 4: Lingyin Temple + West Lake Boat Tour + Tea Plantation Photoshoot
Accommodation: Hangzhou
This was the highlight of the trip for the whole family. We started at Lingyin Temple and Feilai Peak, where ancient stone Buddha carvings left us in awe.
At noon, we took a boat ride on West Lake. The reflection of Leifeng Pagoda shimmered on the water—it’s easy to see why Su Dongpo wrote, “West Lake is always charming, in light or heavy makeup.”
In the afternoon, 小琪 had arranged a tea plantation photoshoot. We dressed up as tea-picking girls, carrying bamboo baskets and laughing as we ran through the tea fields. The photographer captured stunning shots that became our most popular posts on social media.
Day 5: Suzhou Gardens + Hanshan Temple + Shantang Street
Accommodation: Hangzhou
We drove to Suzhou, first stopping at Lion Grove Garden, where winding rockeries felt like a giant maze the kids loved.
In the afternoon, we visited Hanshan Temple, reciting the famous poem “A Night Mooring at Maple Bridge” and experiencing its deep cultural resonance.
In the evening, we explored Shantang Street, a classic Jiangnan night scene filled with food stalls and old white-walled houses—like stepping back in time.
Day 6: Qiandao Lake Luxury Yacht Tour
Accommodation: Hangzhou
Early morning, we set out for Qiandao Lake, boarding a luxury yacht to cruise across turquoise waters dotted with countless islands. From Tianyu Peninsula, the panoramic lake view was breathtaking—we finally understood why it’s called the most beautiful water under heaven.
Day 7: Shanghai — The Glamour of a Metropolis
Accommodation: Shanghai
We drove into Shanghai, where skyscrapers quickly changed the vibe from gentle Jiangnan to metropolitan grandeur. We explored the Underwater Tunnel, Oriental Pearl Tower, Huangpu River, and Chenghuang Temple. At night, The Bund sparkled in lights—we took endless family photos against its dazzling skyline.
Day 8: Departure from Shanghai Pudong Airport — Back to Singapore
Before we left, 小琪 surprised us with thoughtful souvenirs: Longjing tea from Hangzhou and local snacks from Shanghai. With hearts full of warmth and memories, we boarded our flight home.
Trip Summary
This 8-day, 7-night Jiangnan journey cost under RMB 3000 per person (excluding flights), yet we experienced the elegance of West Lake, the charm of ancient water towns, the grace of Suzhou, the crystal waters of Qiandao Lake, and the vibrance of Shanghai. My family and I were beyond happy.
What moved me the most wasn’t just the scenery, but 小琪’s dedication:
She secured the limited night boat tickets in Wuzhen.
She booked lakeside hotels and water town guesthouses.
She found us a professional photographer for tea plantation shoots.
She reminded us to bring mosquito repellent and light walking shoes—small tips that saved us from discomfort.
She cared about every detail, making the trip feel warm, like being at home.
So, if you’re planning to travel to Hangzhou, Wuzhen, Suzhou, or Shanghai, I highly recommend 小琪. With her help, you’ll realize travel can truly be this effortless and special.

@Jefri Ariffendi The Hangzhou travel guide you have written is very detailed. I will definitely go to Hangzhou again if I have the chance. I am still half a Hangzhou person.

Hello! In late March, we will be traveling to Xiaoshan Airport for four days and three nights. We want to visit Wuzhen, Xizha, Xitang, West Lake, and Lingyin Temple. What's the best route to take? We are also traveling with the elderly and children.

@Jefri Ariffendi Thank you very much for sharing. There are only two of us. Can 小琪 also arrange it?

We went there in autumn, and March is the best time to go. You can contact your tour guide 小琪 for the specific itinerary, and he will give you some detailed suggestions. 小琪's contact information: (Wechat) 18889080960

@Coco of course you can. 小琪 also offers small charter tours, which are much cheaper than private tours. We had a large group this time, so we chose the private tour 小琪 recommended. You can contact 小琪 for more details.

@Jefri Ariffendi How was your room for over 3,000 RMB? I previously made my own arrangements for a trip to Suzhou and Hangzhou. The attractions around Hangzhou are very scattered and quite far from each other. It was my first time there, and I was constantly rushing around, leaving me exhausted. We spent over 4,000 RMB per person for four days, not including round-trip airfare. Honestly, the overall experience was a bit exhausting. If I have the chance to go again, I'd definitely consider 小琪's service for both cost-saving and peace of mind.

@鄧東全 Our hotel is a 4-star hotel recommended by 小琪. It's excellent and we're all very satisfied.
This is the hotel we stayed in Wuzhen. Overall, it was very good.

We also asked 小琪 to help arrange our trip to Hangzhou. Since we are older and don’t want to rush with traditional tour groups, 小琪 designed a cost-effective 4-day, 3-night itinerary for us based on our budget: the night view of Wuzhen, Nanxun Ancient Town, the Misty Rain Corridor in Xitang, a West Lake cruise in Hangzhou, and a night cruise on the Bund and Huangpu River in Shanghai. The whole itinerary was neither too fast nor too slow, which was both worry-free and comfortable. It was really special to take a boat tour of West Lake for the first time! Although the budget was limited, the hotels and attractions were arranged very well, and we had a great time this time. If you have friends who have a limited budget and want to relax and travel around Jiangnan, I really recommend contacting 小琪 小琪's contact information: (Wechat) 18889080960

@Jefri Ariffendi has added 小琪's WeChat. Thank you very much for the recommendation, it is really thoughtful. Highly recommended

Last year, when I was preparing for a trip to Zhejiang and Jiangsu, I researched travel guides online, but the more I looked, the more confused and frustrated I became. Then, seeing many people recommending 小琪, saying she was incredibly responsible, I decided to give it a try and added her on WeChat. After chatting, I discovered that 小琪 specializes in independent travelers like us and has a very good reputation.
She tailored our itinerary to our specific needs, providing thoughtful arrangements and excellent service at a very reasonable price. We even booked in advance and got a special deal, spending less than 2,000 RMB per person for three days. It was a relaxing and enjoyable trip—a truly fantastic value!

@kathy杜 Our flight is to Shanghai. Could 小琪 also help arrange it for us? Thank you

@Nick Koh It should be possible. You can contact 小琪 for details. 小琪 Contact information: WeChat: 18889080960

Why do your photos look so good, but mine look like this?

@陳子宸 豆豆 Haha, I think yours looks better than mine

@陳子宸 豆豆 Hahahahahaha, I have contacted 小琪. I also want to take a photo like this
